Lambs to the slaughter they were in that war. My Great Uncle Leonard was one of them. If you go the memorial or any of the war graves you will not fail to be moved.

They must never be forgotten and hopefully never will be.

So did anyone see any of the soldiers around today?

While I'm here. There was a trilogy of books published together a while back. Two of them were by Sassoon and Owen, arguably two of the great war poets.

Ill try to google it later as my phone is fucking about

There is another book worth reading called "A testament of Youth" by Vera Brittain.

It is the first of three books written as an autobiography by VB and details the years 1900-1925. The coverage of her time nursing in France is extensive and compelling to read.

Anyone ever seen Kevin Hicks aka The Warwick Bowman?

He brings history to life in an amazing way... I've seen him at Warwick recounting what it was like to be at Agincourt and I believe he also does a 'Somme soldier' as well, though I've not seen him do it.

Gives more meaning to 'history' than a childhood of history lessons.

Give him a google.

My great grandad was wounded during the battle of the Somme. He was in the Coldstream Guards.

I'm off tomorrow to the 'Chalk Valley Festival' which is an excellent opportunity to gain some insight into how life was during the many wars we've had. Clearly this year there is a special emphasis on The Somme and rightly so. I've a 6 and 9 year old and they loved it last year. It teaches them about our history in a way we as youngsters were never taught. If you've not heard of it, google it, it's an incredible day out and worth the travel...The kids and you as adults will love it.

Let me know what you think of it as / when you read it.

Re. The Somme - John Keegan's The Face of Battle compares Agincourt, Waterloo & The Somme and is a good factual read.

If you haven't read Birdsong then that's worth a read as relevant to the first day of The Somme.

Read "Good-bye to all that" by Robert Graves.

Re: Battle of The Somme
Best book about WW1 that I've read is 'How Young They Died' by Stuart Cloete.

It's a novel but it's based directly on Cloete's experiences... it's 10x better than Birdsong but it's forgotten and not in publication.

You can usually get a copy on ebay or amazon.

I've been trying (poorly) to get it republished, not that I have an association or financial interest... just a travesty that it has been neglected!

Trust me, you won't regret it.

Re: Battle of The Somme
For many years the peage route from Calais, in the Paris/Rheims direction, signposted a view, from the road to the memorial at the top of Vimy ridge. the view from the road has been filled in now because it caused a few high speed accidents.

Re: Battle of The Somme
For obvious reasons I got know a little about Vimy Ridge. That piece of land was fought over for better part of 3 years and cost thousands and thousands of lives.

So very senseless but gratitude and respect for all those who did what they had to in that war.
